Inscription.
Church Street was a bustling center of commerce where businesses of many cultures thrived.
In 1919, the Attucks Theater was designed financed, built and operated by blacks.

We strive to realize the dreams and aspirations. of our ancestors through education, spirituality, ethnic diversity and service to country.
Our faith and spirituality sustain us. They are the center of our family life and activism.

The Attucks Theater, nationally known as the Apollo of the South, was the home of the Church Street Sound.
The courage of our youth, such as Norfolk 17, created the catalyst for change and chartered the course for the future.

The Attucks Theater was one of the few venues where African American Artists could perform in the South.
Church Street was a gateway for diversity and cultures and affectionately known as the "Street that leadeth out of town.
