1200 Washington Avenue
The Everett Block enshrines the memory of one of the greatest scandals of early Golden. Frances E. Everett, banker, mining investor, and respected businessman built this commercial block in 1873. Twice elected mayor, he provided the community with banking and investment services. The community mourned his tragic, self-inflicted death, until it was discovered that he had defrauded his bank customers and lost their deposits in bad mining investments. The second floor of the structure retains much of the original architecture, including the corbeled cornice and arched windows.
