Golden in Jefferson County, Colorado — The American Mountains (Southwest)
History of the Avenue Bridge 4
Although Golden's citizens once understood that the crossing could be safe from floods if its span was extended, they could not afford it. Unfortunately, over time the danger was forgotten. Modern study rediscovered this problem and its solution. It was decided to build a new bridge, a centerpiece for the city at the historic site where the city was first settled. In 2002-2003, most of the old bridge was removed, and today's Washington Avenue Bridge was constructed.
In many ways, today's bridge echoes its predecessors. Its central 75-foot span lies on the exact location of the original span. Its full 105-foot span is the same as was recommended by engineers in 1894. Its metalwork evokes bridges past. The river channel width under the bridge has been restored to allow higher peak flows. Today's Avenue Bridge is an enduring monument built on the work of Golden's generations past.
