Hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church

Hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church. . Reverend Robert Holman reported to the Presbytery of South Alabama that he along with four others organized Hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church on February 26, 1835. Duncan and John B. Brown, of Brownville Community's namesake family, were among the organizers. The church's growing prominence as a camp meeting site along with the continued development of the Brownville community led to a permanent church building being constructed by the end of the 1830's. Family names closely associated with Hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church include: Brown, Carmichael, McKay, Rogers, McNeill, McDiarmid, McPhail, Johnson, Watts, Fulton and Swindall., Reverse Side , Hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church supported a church in Goodwater (originally known as "Corinth") in 1868 and another church in Hollins in 1889. The church constructed an arbor in the early 1890's that was later enlarged and has remained in good condition. The original church was moved south of its location to be used as a schoolhouse in 1901. Services were held in the new church for the first time in 1902. The plastered inside walls of the church was a design feature not common in rural buildings at the time. The 40 pews were all made from one large pine tree.
