Inscription.
John B. Morris was the pioneer business man of the town of New Mexico, Mo. Born in Pendleton County, Kentucky on December 3rd, 1806. John Morris moved to Audrain County in 1836 and built the first house on the grounds now included within the limits of Mexico. He afterwards built a store-room and was for several years engaged in mercantile. He also held the office of Postmaster for about fifteen years. When Audrain County was established, Judge Morris was appointed clerk of both county and circuit court, and after the separation of these offices he continued to hold the office of clerk of the county court until 1858, at which time he was elected judge of the same court. In 1862 he was re-elected and served until May 1st 1866 when his seat became vacant under the ousting ordinance of the State Convention. In November 1866, he was called to the county bench, and again in 1870 and 1871 being at the time of his death presiding judge.

Judge Morris was the father of thirteen children, all of them whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Judge Morris was remembered as the noblest work of God, and honest man. John Morris died December
