This monument, set into the wall of the old town hall in Nieuwsteeg, was erected in 1953 for all 56 Hoorn residents who died in the war. The plaque is a tribute to them; it(Submitted on November 16, 2025.)reminds us how war cruelly and irreparably disrupts the lives of ordinary people. That's why wreaths are hung here every year on May 4th.
Each name represents a life, and each name tells its own story. Seven victims were soldiers who died fighting the Germans and Japanese. The others were ordinary civilians. Three of them were in the resistance and were shot for it. Others died during prisoner transport, in a concentration camp, or because they were forced to work in German industry (Arbeitseinsatz). Tragically, twelve days before the liberation, another person was shot by German landwachters during a street arrest.
Twelve names on the wall are of residents of Jewish descent. They were murdered in the Auschwitz or Sobibor extermination camps. The name of a six-month-old child is not listed here: the boy Hans Agsteribbe was born in captivity in Amsterdam and gassed along with his mother in Sobibor.
