1. King Strang Hotel Marker

Inscription.

This historic hotel was built in 1901 by Captain Manus Bonner at a cost of $10,000. The architect was Father Zugelder, the Island priest. The lumber was boomed from Hog Island and cut at the Stebbins and Tilly mill. A second planned wing was never built. Manus took guests to the other Islands on the schooner he moored out front. The hotel was the center of social activities for everyone on the Island. In 1934 Everett Cole changed the name from the Beaver Hotel to the King Strang Hotel, after James Jesse Strang, one-time King of the Beaver Island Mormons. Until 1953 it was the only hotel in the Bay area. This is now a private club.
