Regarding James Mitchell House. National Register Statement of Significance excerpt:
The James Mitchell house is of architectural significance to the town of Indiana because it is one of the few remaining vernacular Federal style buildings within the borough limits.
Tax assessment records for the years 1856-1860 indicate that James Mitchell's occupation was that of Innkeeper. It seems quite likely that he used his home as an Inn. It was during this period that commerce and transportation were rapidly expanding in Indiana County as a result of the completion of the Pa. canal and the Pa. railroad.
Attorney Bob Marcus bought and restored the building in 1983 and it now serves as one of his law offices.
