Rowboat and flooded houses after the storm surge on the night of January 13-14, 1916. Due to breaches in the Zuiderzee dikes, almost all of Waterland suffered severe flooding. Most of Monnickendam was also submerged for days. A mark on the facade of the house across the street (Zonnepad 1) indicates the water level. After a few days, the water still reached the windowsills. A barge lies in front of the house. Above street level, on the left of the photo, the bow of a flat-bottomed boat can be seen.

2. Het Zonnepad Marker - wide view
The Zonnepad is is the street visible here on the opposite side of the canal. Unfortunately the condition of the photo on the marker is too poor to be useful in trying to compare the flood photo with the houses now.
