1. The Medal of Honor Marker
Inscription. The Medal of Honor is the highest military award for bravery that can be given to an individual in the United States of America. The Medal was first presented in 1863 and is awarded to a person whose deed is so outstanding that it clearly distinguishes the person's gallantry, beyond the call of duty, from other forms of bravery. The act must also involve an extreme risk of life and it must be the type of deed that would not have subjected the individual to any justifiable criticism if it had not been accomplished. The deed must be verified by the incontestable evidence of two eyewitnesses.

The Army, Navy and Airforce, have each been authorized a Medal of Honor. While all of the medals are similar in overall design, each branch of the military service has design characteristics that set it apart from the other branches.

The Medal of Honor is presented to its recipient by a high official of the Government of the United States. This is often the President or his designated representative. The medal is awarded "In the name of the Congress of the United States." As a result, it derived its unofficial title of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
