Heritage District in Sunnyvale in Santa Clara County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
Murphy Station District
| — | Heritage Landmark | — |
In 1898, W. E. Crossman, a real estate developer, purchased 200 acres from Murphy and named the town Encinal, “Place where the live oak grows.” The first post office and general store were built on this street near the site of Murphy Station. The town was renamed Sunnyvale in 1901 and incorporated in 1912. The railroad and industrial buildings running east and west, and the business district running north and south provided the base from which Sunnyvale grew. The 100 block of South Murphy Avenue is the original downtown commercial district where most of the structures were built between 1900 and 1940.
Erected 1987 by The Sunnyvale Heritage Preservation Commission.
