Lewis Clark LeRoy Davis, born in Mississippi in 1892, entered the U. S. Forest Service in 1911. He was assigned to the Williams Fork District in 1914. When he brought his bride, Minnie Mae Potter of Boulder, to Scholl, the young couple moved into this new Horseshoe Ranger Station. The first of their six daughters, Juanita, was born there the next winter.

Roy caught rheumatic fever in 1916-17; despite this, he won a second place medal in the 1917 Middle Park Ski Club sled race. That same year he received his draft notice for military service; because of his job as a ranger, he was excused from going.

Davis left the Forest Service in 1918, partly because of his health. However, he dreamt of having a ranch. The Davises moved to Boulder where he joined the fire department; he remained there until his retirement.

Minnie's parents, the M.O. Potters, visited the area in 1916 and loved it; they homesteaded the adjoining ranch on the Williams Fork in Ute Park. Roy and Minnie enjoyed this favorite summer vacation spot until the Potters sold out. Roy's father, a professional photographer, took many photos of the local scenes whenever he came.
