1. Stone's Crossing Marker
Inscription. Stone's Crossing was named for Elijah ‘Old Man’ Stone and his family – first wife Elizabeth Ann Taylor and their nine children and second wife Rachel Dorrell Lampkins and their daughter. Stone came from Ohio to Indiana as a youth in 1816 and to Johnson County in 1859, began farming, and was a boot and shoemaker in 1882. In 1890 he established a general store on the northwest corner of Three- Notch Lane (now SR 135) and what is now CR 700N, an important meeting and trading site for local residents. The trading helped grow the population of Stone's Crossing from 30 in 1880 to 115 in 1894. A post office existed there between 1874 and 1905. Elijah died February 18, 1893.
