Here Stood Quarters 1, Building 25. . Building 25, also known as Quarters 1, was composed of two individual houses that were originally constructed in 1901 as living quarters for laborers building the trolley lines between Richmond and Peterburg. Timber for the buildings was grown on the Bellwood estate. The vernacular two-story, wood frame buildings were originally on the Bellwood property, to the west of the Richmond-Peterburg Turnpike (now Jefferson Davis Highway). The two houses were later moved and joined in 1913 by the construction of a large central hall and staircase. In 1913, James Bellwood gave the two houses to his youngest son Frank and his wife Helen as a wedding gift. The houses were moved and joined together at a location approximately 200 feet west of this site. The new home was decorated with Queen Anne fretwork and a large porch was added along three sides Frank and Helen Bellwood lived in the house until the Bellwood property was sold to the U.S. Government in 1941. In 1942, the military moved the house to allow more space for nearby warehouses. Building 25 (Quarters 1), with its park-like setting complete with mature oak and magnolia trees on the eastern periphery of the installation, served as home to the installation commanders from 1942-2009.
