1. José de Espronceda Marker
(Almendralejo de los Barros 1808 - Madrid 1842).
Poeta del Romanticismo. Vivió de niño en la calle de Lobo, actual Echegaray, y aquí asistió al colegio San Mateo, donde estudió con Alberto Lista. Atraído por la literatura y la actividad política fundó junto a Patricio de la Escosura la sociedad secreta “Los Numantinos”. La represión politica que siguió al al trienio liberal motivó su encierro en un convento de Guadalajara, donde emprendió la redacción de Don Pelayo. Exiliado en Lisboa, Londres y Paris de regreso a España, ciertos pronunciamientos le supusieron nuevas persecuciones. En su destierro en Cuellar compuso Sancho Saldaña o El Castellano de Cuellar y El Estudiante de Salamanca. En 1840 con la victoria liberal turo diputado en Cortes por Almería.
Obra poética: Don Pelayos; A jarifa en una orgía; Canciones - que incluye la Canción del Pirata, el Canto del cosaco, El mendigo, El reo de muerte y E Verdugo - dos poemas largos, El estudianta de Salemanca y El diablo mundo.
A Romantic poet, he lived as a child on Lobo Street (now Echegaray Street) and attended the colegio San Mateo, where he studied with Alberto Lista. Drawn to literature and political activism, he founded the secret society "Los Numantinos" with Patricio de la Escosura. The political repression that followed the Liberal Triennium led to his confinement in a convent in Guadalajara, where he began writing Don Pelayo. Exiled in Lisbon, London, and Paris, upon his return to Spain, certain pronouncements brought him further persecution. During his exile in Cuéllar, he composed “Sancho Saldaña, or The Castilian of Cuéllar”, and “The Student of Salamanca”. In 1840, with the Liberal victory, he became a deputy in the Cortes for Almería.
