1. Iglesia Ponteficia de San Miguel / Pontifical Basilica of St. Michael Marker
1789 • 1745
This church was built on the site of the now-vanished Romanesque church of Saints Justus and Pastor and was financed by Cardinal-Infante Don Luis de Borbón y Farnesio, Archbishop of Toledo. The architect Teodoro de Ardemans drew up a plan in 1698, which was never implemented. A new design was commissioned to Santiago Bonavia, who built a single-nave church with side chapels featuring concave and convex forms. The two vaults of the transept and the center of the nave are particularly noteworthy, adorned with frescoes by B. Rusca and the González Velázquez brothers, respectively. The interior decoration is Rococo. The convex façade is crowned by two towers and a curved pediment. In 1930, it was elevated to the status of a pontifical basilica, and in 1984, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
