Settling the Crossroad
Pioneer settlers chose the present-day site for settlement because it was at an intersection of several early trails. It was built on the bluff to avoid the flooding along Ralston Creek and Clear Creek.
A new town has been laid out . . . midway between Golden and Denver. A . . . church, store . . . depot and two dwelling houses are already secured . . .. The vast grain crops of Ralston and Clear Creeks in its neighborhood, besides the junction of Pine Bluff Road, gives it a start such as few towns have in such a new country as Colorado. (Golden Transcript, December 1, 1870)
The new town, founded by Benjamin F. Wadsworth on land owned by him and Louis Reno, was named by Mary Ann, his wife, for her brother-in-law, Hiram Arvada Haskin.
Becoming a City
After two failed attempts, the Town of Arvada was officially incorporated on August 24, 1904, population 600. The first mayor, Dr. Richard Russell, and town board took office in 1905. City tax dollars quickly followed to bring sewer and water systems, street lighting and fire carts and engines.
On November 1, 1951, the town became the City of Arvada, population 2,359.
