Hôtel de Castries
| — | Histoire de Paris | — |
Built for Jean Dufour de Nogent around 1696, it belonged to the Marquises and then the Dukes of Castries between 1708 and 1886. The most famous of them, Marshal de Castries, was Minister of the Navy under Louis XVI. A duel between his son and the deputy Charles de Lameth, who had embraced the new ideas, led to the ransacking of the mansion by the revolutionary mob on November 13, 1790. The sword that wounded Lameth is said to have been poisoned. Used by the Ministry of War during the emigration of its owners, the Hôtel de Castries has belonged to the State since 1946. The courtyard façade and the interior decoration were completely redesigned in the mid-19th century by J.-A. Froelicher and C. Parent.
