Inscription. George Washington Thomason
Born July 20, 1863, Mabank, Van Zandt, Co. Texas. Son of Frank and Martha Thomason. Married Katie Belle Waggoner, Mar. 24, 1898, in Pottawatomie Со., I.T. She was 2/8 Cherokee Indian. Dau. of Alice Applewhite and Isum Baily Waggoner. Children are Jimmie, William, Edgar, Arthur, Capl, Woodrow Buford, Jack, Mildred, Glennie, Agnes and Naomi. 1900, moved by covered wagon from Johnson Co. Tex. and settled in Wild Cat community. Engaged in farming, built roads, bridges, schools and churches. Served as school trustee. Later moved near Blake. Raised dairy cattle and farmed in summer months. Taught community-wide singing school, ordained minister, conducted many brush-arbor revivals. 1944, moved to Mangum. Died Sept. 25, 1946. 1959 was made charter member of National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Okla. City, Okla.

Wade Hampton Shumate
Born July 10, 1879, Sherman, Texas. Son of Wiley H. and Huldah L. Cannon Shumate. Came to Mangum 1905 as H.S. principal and football coach. Supt. of Schools Granite Fairview, Sallisaw, Mangum, and Holdenville. Director of teacher training N.E. State College, Tahlequah, President S.E. State College, Durant. April 15, 1906 married Maude Elizabeth Chenault. Mangum teacher who later became H.S. principal of Granite and Fairview. They had one daughter, Wahlel and three grand children. Veteran Spanish American War, member V.F.W. 32, Mason, Shriner, Rotary Club, B.P.U. Elks, Christian Church life member, Okla. Education Assoc., Mangum City Commissioner, 1942-1944, Greer County representative to state legislature, 1945-1951. Mr. Shumate died Aug. 31, 1955. Mrs. Shumate died July 5, 1960.
