Inscription.
Established in 1884 by Dan Cort, the first business in the building was the Cort-Hames Mercantile, one of the oldest firms in Elbert County. The building was originally located across the street on the northwest corner of Broadway and Main St. An advertisement from 1889 stated, "We keep everything needed to supply the country trade," and included groceries, furnishings, and lumber. The business was sold to H.M. DeWitt in 1909, then later to his clerk George McClellan who renamed it the Elizabeth Mercantile and ran it until the 1960's. It remained a general store, owned by Joe and Maxine Stevenson, then Jack and Zelma Gesin, until the 1970's.

George Carlson, American Western artist and sculptor, then bought the building, moved it to its current location, and used it as a studio. It housed the Elizabeth Public Library from 1992 until 2011.
