Shiremanstown in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Jacob Miller - 1874
This portion of Main Street, part of the Civil War militia drill field, was still empty beyond the blacksmith shop in the 1872 county atlas map. Records show Christian and Mary Eberly, owners of the field, sold this property to Jacob Miller in 1874. Jacob, a local merchant, probably built this home shortly thereafter. Jacob died in 1897, and after the estate settlement ownership passed to his son J. Morris Miller.
When John Nebinger purchased this home in 1919, he consolidated his cobbler shop and dairy business here. He drove the wagon he had purchased from C.G. Stair, Shiremanstown's first milkman, dipping fresh milk from the 10 gallon dairy cans into customer's pails. As time progressed, and regulations tightened, John purchased pasteurized milk in bulk, and bottled it here. In 1923, John bought a truck, and added butter and eggs to his line. In time, he discontinued bottling and purchased bottled milk from Rakestraw's in Mechanicsburg.
About 1955, he sold out to Rakestraw's and retired to raising plants in his greenhouse. John died in 1967, and his wife conveyed the property to their son in law and daughter, Elmer and Rena Evinger. In 1980, James and Carol Bogar purchased the property. In 2002, this became the home of the current owners, Ed and Tammie Dailey. Mrs. Dailey was appointed the first woman Mayor of Shiremanstown in April 2016.
