Shiremanstown in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Rupp General Store - Built Before 1862
Inscription.
Henry Rupp built this building which included a general store sometime prior to 1862, when it was sold at public sale to satisfy debts. He lived on a farm near town, and ran a commission and forwarding business in town. His son Daniel Rupp operated the store, and bought the property in 1863. It is not clear whether he or any of the Rupps ever lived here, and later owners definitely lived elsewhere. In 1875, Daniel sold the property to his brother Henry Rupp, and built the carriage factory across Railroad Avenue. Henry and his wife Kate operated a grocery. In 1929, Henry's estate sold the grocery to Lawrence and Evelyn Harlacher.
Around 1936, the Shiremanstown Post Office was moved to an addition at the rear of the building. This Post Office, with the door on Railroad Avenue, was used by almost everyone in town, as there was no home delivery. It served until 1962, when it was replaced by the Post Office on Main Street. In 1941, the grocery was sold to Nellie Bower, with the building listed as a dwelling house, apartment, and store. In 1963, Mrs. Bower closed the grocery and leased the space to Mrs. Morrow, who operated a lunch counter and restaurant for a short time. In 1964, Morris and Marion Stoyer bought the property, remodeled it, and opened Stoyer's Pharmacy.
In 1983, the Stoyers sold the building to Harold and Kathryn Fetrow, their son Harold Fetrow II, and his wife Jean Fetrow. The Fetrows remodeled the building to look much like it did in this old photo. A sign above the lower left window indicates that this was also an Adams Express office. Along the street, horse hitches can be seen, and the hand pump for the well can be seen at the lower right.
