Shiremanstown in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Atticks Tailor Shop - Built Mid 1800s
Inscription.
Originally, part of the Rupp homestead the property on which the house sits was deeded to the Margaret Wise family in 1842. It was willed to her sons Peter and Jeremiah L. Wise in 1861. This is the first time a dwelling was recorded. A blanket chest was left in the attic bearing a signature of J. L. Wise, Shiremanstown Pa. which the current owners use to this day. The property left the family's ownership in 1885 and was purchased by Isaiah Steigelman.
In 1897, Robert Atticks, tailor at nearby Bowman's, married Isaiah's daughter Lena. In the 1900 census, Robert was listed as head of the household, with Lena and their daughter Mary, as well as Isaiah and four other Steigelman in laws. In 1902, Robert bought the property. Around this time, Robert opened his own tailor shop, as shown in the drawing. Robert made men's clothing to order, sitting cross-legged on his cutting table just behind the plate glass window. Cleaning and pressing was done in the back room, with sad irons heated on a coal stove. The plate glass window was later cut down to make smaller windows, and the ghosts of the lettering could be seen on the end window of the home when the sun hit the window just right. Those windows have since been replaced.
Prior to John Getz purchasing the home in 1985 the home remained in the family for 4 generations spanning 100 years. John later converted it into a single dwelling. In 1997 he married Lucy Locke Getz and together they substantially remodeled the home, respecting its historical significance.
