Following the lead of Benjamin Franklin, newspapers swept west with the settlers. Originally only affordable to the affluent, newspapers became accessible to the masses with the introduction of high-speed letterpresses and cheaper newsprint.
Most papers failed quickly. But those that survived became an integral part of their communities, chronicling the daily lives, issues, and events of its citizens as well as offering a window into national and international affairs. The town newspaper was the lifeline and identity of those communities fortunate enough to have an editor and press.
In recent years local newspapers have been disappearing across rural America. This mural celebrates the small town newspaper and the rapidly vanishing art of letterpress printing.
