Shiremanstown in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
The Shell Home & Butchery - Early 1900s
Inscription.
In 1765, this was part of 300 acres in East Pennsborough Township known as "Montmelion". The land was deeded to Conrad Maneschmidt by Governor John Penn.
Daniel and Anny Sharbane deeded a parcel of 81 acres to John Roope in 1811.
Mary Eberly and her decendents lived on the land from 1873 until 1912.
This home is believed to have been built in 1917 for Adam Shell. The outbuilding, where he operated his butchery, was added in 1920. The meat hooks still hang in the building today. Shell sold his meats at the Harrisburg Markets. Livestock slaughtering, processing and sales were a thriving family enterprise. The Shells, and later their son John W., lived here until 1960.
John Shell sold the property to Robert and Mildred Kraly in 1960. They converted the main house to Kraly's Senior Citizens Home, which remained here until 1987.
The wrap-around front porch was restored in 1987 by David and Karen Ruptnik, bringing the home back to its original beauty.
The current owners, Michael and Mary Messick, have enjoyed and maintained the historic home since 2014.
