Inscription.
Hannibal Square began as a planned, segregated community on the west side of Winter Park when the town was established in 1882. It was named after Hannibal Barca, the famous African General who led his army through Spain and the Alps to besiege Rome.

New England Avenue, between Pennsylvania and New York avenues, was the commercial hub of the community. Some early thriving businesses in and surrounding the community included Frank R. Israel's Grocery and Feed Store, Meade Colston Groceries, Laughlin Hotel and Restaurant, Arthur Straughter's Confectionery and Pool Hall, the P. Albert Duhart Cleaners, Mary Bell's Beauty Salon, Shack Paul's Place, Earl McKinney's Barbecue Van, Moore's Tea Room, Baby’s Lunch Box, James Robert's Fish Market, Ben Myers Ice Cream Parlor, Wesley Glenn’s Rooming House and Diner, Tank and Carrie Moore's Laundromat and a butcher shop owned Emmit Ball, Verdie Harris and Roy Ray, Sr.

Hannibal Square residents were the work force responsible for hewing the land and constructing the earliest buildings. Additionally, without the votes of Hannibal Square residents, Winter Park would not have become incorporated into a city.
