New Bedford City Hall's Plaza is dedicated to the memory of New Bedford native Joseph Theodore (1917-2008), "The Flag Way". A twice-wounded World War II veteran who tirelessly promoted peace and respect for the stars and stripes, including successfully petitioning the United States Congress to required the American flag be lit at all times. His countless efforts to recognize the sacrifices of veterans in meaningful ways resulted in many patriotic events celebrated throughout the city. Above all, Mr. Theodore loved New Bedford and the city's long history of embracing people of all nationalities and races. His work will forever stand as a model for all citizens of New Bedford.
