Regarding Walgreens 3000th Drugstore. Charles Walgreen Sr. founded the company in 1901 in Chicago; as noted on the plaque dedicated to him on the other side of the doorway at this store, there were 493 Walgreens at the time of his death in 1939. Kevin Walgreen was the last family member to hold an executive role; he resigned in 2006. As of 2025 the company is owned by a private equity firm, Sycamore Partners.
As of the announcement of Sycamores acquisition in early 2025, there were an estimated 8,700 Walgreens stores in the U.S. The 1000th
store is also in Chicago, opening in 1984 in the Gold Coast neighborhood. The 2000th was in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1994. The 6000th Walgreens is in New Orleans.
