Inscription.  French:

In 1938, American engineers proposed a 90 mm anti-aircraft gun on a rotating mount. In 1940, it was adopted as the 90 mm AA Gun M1. The gun was excellent, but its gyro-controlled rotary mount was complex to produce.

In July 1941, the new M1A1 model replaced the M1, making it easier to transport and more effective. In combat, an anti-aircraft battery consisted of four 90 mm guns paired with an M7 gun director, an SCR 584 radar with a searchlight for night use and a rangefinder.

The battery's guns were remotely controlled from a gun data computer, first electromechanically, then electronically by the end of the war. The equipment was heavy and time-consuming to operate.

The 90 mm gun M1/M2/M3 was an American heavy anti-aircraft and anti-tank gun, playing a role similar to the German 8.8cm Flak 18. It had a 3.5 in (90 mm) diameter bore, and a 50 caliber barrel, giving it a length of 15 ft (4.6 m). It was capable of firing a 3.5 in × 23.6 in (90 mm × 600 mm) shell 62,474 ft (19,042 m) horizontally, or a maximum altitude of 43,500 ft (13,300 m).
