Inscription.
This VanCleave Cottage at 1302 Government Street was built by Junius P. VanCleave around 1900. The Cottage is architecturally significant in Ocean Springs as the most representative existing example of the Queen Anne Cottage residential building style, which was so popular in Mississippi during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The VanCleave Cottage is a one-story, wood frame, L-shaped building which rests on low brick piers and has a cross-gable roof. The facade consists of an asymmetric projecting chamfered bay that is flanked by a shed- roofed porch. The porch features turned posts, sawn brackets and a spindle frieze. The gables are clad in imbricated shingles. The two-over-two double-hung sash windows are set in simple architraves as is the transomed door which has a large glazed panel.

This VanCleave Cottage retains all of the essential features that define the Queen Anne style. Similar buildings have survived in Ocean Springs, however, most have lost significant amounts of ornamentation or have a complexity of design that was not typical of the majority of such cottages.

This informational sign is part of a community project led by the Historic Ocean Springs Association, and is made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area.

We thank the City of Ocean Springs for their support of this project.
