1. Washington Avenue Marker
Inscription.
This illustration is from an Ocean Springs postcard mailed in 1905. It shows horse-drawn wagons carrying wooden barrels along Washington Avenue. The barrels may well have held turpentine or resin, which were important industrial products produced from the many tall pine forests abundant in the area.

Early commerce in this community saw products transported by horse drawn carriages and oxen-led wagons up and down Washington Avenue, first delivering to the steamboat wharf on the Biloxi Bay at the foot of Jackson Avenue, and then after the railroad arrived in 1869, up Washington to the train depot.

Postcard image loaned from a private collection. This informational sign is part of a community project led by the Historic Ocean Springs Association, and is made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area.

We thank the City of Ocean Springs for their support of this project.
