West Hoosick. . Without definite boundaries, West Hoosick came into being, settled by a group of stalwart, sober-minded farmers., Silas Herrington was one of the earliest settlers at West Hoosick who came to the valley of the Nepimose from Scituate, Rhode Island in 1784., West Hoosick's businesses included a grist mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a Union store that was financed by the local families, and a Post Office., On a list of the original subscribers for erecting the West Hoosick Church dated April 24, 1845, we find names of families long prominent in the hamlet: Baker, Herrington, Joslin, Moseley, and Pine., The cemetery is located on the southwest corner of the former J. Moseley farm, the early Nepimose Rd. In 1835 land was sold to 15 other families and the West Hoosick Rural Cemetery Association was formed in 1882., The first school stood right at the corner, next to the grist mill, on the Herrington Property. The Herrington district school burned in 1926 and the second school (now the Fire House) was built in 1927. The Adventist Christian Church was formed in 1858 and burned in 1956, and a stone marker still stands in the original spot., District School #13 operated from 1812 -1956, when it was closed due to centralization. It' is now a private home., Heinrich "Henry" Dopking, from Brandenburgh, Germany is believed to have been a soldier in the Royal American Regiment - the British 60th Regiment of Foot. This is the same regiment that fellow German Hoosick District settler Franz Pfister served in at the time. It is believed Henry fought in the 7 Years' War (1759-1763). He was happily ensconced on that land that he owned and paid taxes on in the Hoosick District by 1779. Henry was married with three sons and their land and log cabin was on Ford Rd. Henry is buried on his land with his headstone still standing.
