1. Hawaii Theatre 1922 Marker
Inscription.
Built as Consolidated Amusements's flagship, the Hawaii Theatre was created as a presentation house to accommodate all forms of entertainment. At the time, its monumental Neoclassical design was unique in the Territory of Hawaii. The spectacular interior with its Corinthian columns, Beaux -Arts style ornamentation, Allegorical Proscenium mural and delicate artwork earned it the nickname "Pride of the Pacific".

Neighborhood deterioration led to a closure in 1984 and the threat of demolition. Local citizens formed a nonprofit to save the. building and embarked on a $32 million renovation. Beautifully restored to the highest standards, the theatre helped revive the neighborhood as an arts and entertainment destination following its 1996 reopening. The Hawaii Theatre remains the last "Movie Palace" of its kind in the State.

Erected by City and County of Honolulu, State of Hawaii.
