On this site stood a two story brick building erected in 1871 by P.A. Veazey. The upper story served as the first courthouse of Iberia Parish from that date until 1884 when a new facility was constructed on main street. The lower floor was used as a coffee house. When parish officials moved into their new quarters, the former Courthouse became the Vendome Opera House, a place for plays, concerts and public gatherings. On May 20, 1905, just hours after a high school commencement exercise, fire destroyed the building. A few years later the present structure was erected.
