Documented as early as the 8th century, the priory was reorganized under the protection of King Henry I in the 11th century. The church, where Romanesque and Gothic styles blend, was rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries. Pierre de Montreuil, architect of the Sainte-Chapelle, built the refectory in the mid-13th century. The monastic buildings were erected by Antoine at the end of the 18th century. The Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts) was established in the former priory in 1798, and the current buildings were constructed between 1845 and 1896 by Vaudoyer.
The church has become an annex of the museum, and the refectory, its library. At the corner of Rue Saint-Martin and Rue du Vertbois, a tower from the 13th-century walls still stands.
