Inscription.

The Saint-Clair fountain was an object of pilgrimage for a long time, and believers went there to draw water for healing eye diseases and blindness. Saint Clair is said have been born in Rochester, England in the year 845. In order to escape a marriage arranged by his father, he crossed the Channel and landed in the North Cotentin, where he settled as a hermit.
He was forced to leave when the wife of a notable local made advances towards him, and travelled east, settling in the former region of Vexin. There, two murderers sent by the woman followed him and split the top of his skull at the eyes, as is depicted by the statue in the church. Clair stood up, carrying his skull, which he plunged in nearby fountain before dying.
