Reverend Lemuel Haynes
July 18, 1753-September 28, 1833

First African-American ordained as a minister in a mainstream Protestant church Internationally recognized for his writings on freedom and republicanism

Lemuel Haynes was born in the West Division of Hartford, (West Hartford, CT) and freed after indentured servitude in Granville, MA. Rev. Haynes was ordained as a Congregational minister in 1785, serving churches in Torrington, CT, West Rutland, VT, and South Granville, NY.

Free, at the age 21, from indentured servitude, he served in the Revolutionary War. He was the first African-American to receive an honorary degree from an American College, Middlebury College, in 1804.
