Weber Normal College
1918
| | The First Hundred Years A Foundation for the Future | |
With the beginning of normal classes offered earlier and college courses added in 1916, a major emphasis was placed on college work. The Board of Turstees authorized the name, Weber Normal College, on February 13, 1918 and the administrative title of "Principal" was changed to that of "President." During this period of time, conditions associated with World War I and its related financial difficultires impaced the school which was closed for an extended period of time becuase of an influenza epidemic during the fall and winter of 1918.
A major building program for a school gymnasium begun some years earlier was intensified during this time but would not be completed for several years. Both the school newspaper, The Weber Herald, and the literary magazine-yearbook, The Acorn, continued to be upgraded. The school continued to devolop and enhance a strong debate and forensics program and a number of student social and honor societies were extablished as were several traditions associated with the founding of the school. Both high school and college work was offered at this time with an added emphasis on business and music, both of which were listed as separate divisions of the school. A two-year curriculum for college students majoring in the arts and sciences prepared students for advanced work in law, medicine, commerce, engineering, and the sciences. A strong attachment to the school was developed by alumni; many of whom attended for four years of instruction in the high school division and then continued in the college division for two additional years.
