Weber College
1924
| | The First Hundred Years A Foundation for the Future | |
With the beginning of the school year in 1922, the school's name was changed to Weber College to reflect the institution's new role and mission; the high school department was discontinued; and the last high school class graduated in the spring of 1923. A new era of change and growth was ushered in with the completion of the long-awaited gymnasium building in 1925 which provided expanded administrative and student services functions. Great strides were reached in the development of the junior college curricula with recognition and acceptance of course offerings by other state institutions and accreditation teams. Alumni involvement with fund-raising efforts were intensified and homes and property adjacent to the campus were purchased through alumni efforts.
The future of the school was placed in jeopardy with the decision of the L.D.S. Church to discontinue the operation of many of its schools because of financial concerns and changes in church education philosophy. Efforts to have the state assume operation of the college were actively promoted by school leaders, faculty, students and the community.
Administrators struggled to keep Weber's doors open; resorting to such innovative practices as accepting gifts-in-kind in lieu of student tuition; and payment of faculty with promissory script; and student aid programs. Legislation was finally approved for the transfer of the college from the L.D.S. church to the State of Utah effective July 1, 1933 and the college entered into a new phase as a public-supported insitituion of higher learning.
