The Donald T. Dust Awardpresented toThe Hanini Group Developer, Designer and Builder for the exterior restoration and adaptive reuse of the interior of First National State Bank Building 810 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey. This stately office building, one of Newark's earliest skyscrapers, was designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert and constructed in 1912, shortly before the completion of Gilbert's Woolworth Building in Manhattan. In converting the building to the Hotel Indigo, a boutique hotel operated by the Intercontinental Hotel chain, the Hanini Group scrupulously restored the terra cotta exterior including the original cornice, which has been incorporated into a rooftop restaurant. The existing marble stairway on the first and second floors has been restored, and the original ground floor safe has been preserved through its conversion to a pizza oven. The adaptive reuse of distinguished but aging structures like the First National State Bank Building is a sustainable practice that merges environmental, economic and aesthetic concerns.
