1. Symington House Marker

Inscription.
The third oldest house in Newark and last of the mansions once lining Military Park, this was built in 1808 as the rectory of the nearby Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1888 Robert B. Symington bought the Federal-style house and made it more luxurious. The Symington family sold the house to Continental Insurance Co., which refurbished it for the headquarters of Newark's 300th anniversary celebration in 1966. Trinity Cathedral regained the property in 1978, renamed it St. Philip's House, and opened a school here in 1988.
