M1918A3 (Modernized) Schneider. . After the First World War, the French Schneider howitzer was adopted by the U.S. Army as the M1918. Issued as the M1918A3, it had rubber tires (a marked improvement over wooden wheels). Additionally, air brakes were added for greater deceleration control at higher towing speeds. In Mississippi, the 114th Field Artillery Regiment used this type of howitzer in 1938. Battery guns of the Regiment were dispersed in the towns and cities of the state.
