Engineers Arsenal. World War I. This arsenal building, or "ammo magazine," is the last surviving structure of over 1,200 built at Camp Shelby during World War I. Originally located Ό mile southeast of its current site, just west of the World War I remount depot (stables), it was one of four magazines constructed on a spur line off the connecting railroad between the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad and the Mississippi Central Railroad. While the other three, larger magazines were for general use, this structure was earmarked for storage of detonating caps and fuses for the engineers. During World War II, it was used as a storehouse., The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 and designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1995.
