1. OV-1 Mohawk Observational Aircraft Marker

Inscription. The OV-1 was built as a multi-sensor tactical observation reconnaissance aircraft. As part of the OV-1's standard configuration, it was outfitted with high quality cameras and upward-firing illumination flare launchers for day and night photography The most dynamic version of the Mohawk is the OV-1B, which carried APS-94 SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar). Using this radar, the OV-1B could fly parallel to any given battleground and take radar generated photographs from both sides of the aircraft simultaneously. Using these pictures, area commanders were able to make more informed decisions about where and how to deploy their troops. For protection during missions, the OV-1 held a complement of flares and chaff dispensers.

According to a 1965 Department of Defense rule, the Army was forbidden to arm any of their fixed-wing aircraft. However, the OV-1: had the capability to carry and use .50 caliber mini-guns, 500 pound bombs, or anti-tank missiles.
