M1860 Trubia Cannon. . Designed by Colonel Francisco Elorza (director of the Royal Trubia Arsenal from 1844 to 1862), the first Spanish rifled cannon of this caliber was produced in August 1860: Referred to as a "Muzzle Loading Rifled" gun (MLR), the M1860 was made of cast iron and weighs 6,245.8 pounds (2838 kilograms). Its caliber was 6.3 inches (16 centimeters). When elevated to 15° and using a 10 pound (4.5 kilograms) powder charge, it could be made to fire a 93.5 pound (42.5 kilograms) zinc lugged projectile to a range of 3.9 miles (6,340 meters) at a muzzle velocity of 1630 feet (497 meters) per second., This particular gun departed Spain in the late 1800's aboard a wooden sailing ship. It was then taken to the Philippine Islands where it was deployed as a fortress gun in the vicinity of Subic Bay. At some point after the end of the Second World War and the reoccupation of the Philippine Islands by the United States Navy, the cannon was placed at the entrance gate to the Subic Bay Naval Magazine where it remained until the mid 1990s. When that naval facility was eventually closed, US Navy Sea Bees dismantled the cannon and loaded it aboard ship where it eventually arrived at the Naval Construction Battalion Center at Gulfport, MS.
