The Foreest Building
These were originally three buildings, the oldest of which dates from the 16th century. The 1724 Louis XIV-style facade was commissioned by the wealthy and distinguished regent Nanning van Foreest. The building was owned by the Van Foreest family between 1671 and 1801 and has been used as a church since 1802.

The Foreestenhuis has always been owned by the wealthy Van Foreest family. Mayor Nanning van Foreest commissioned its construction. Besides being mayor, he was also a director of the Dutch East India Company and one of the wealthiest people in Hoorn. The design of the facade exudes that wealth

and status, primarily through its size. The city villa consists of three separate buildings. After the merger, the building was seven bays wide; we count each window and the entrance as a bay. The design of the facade dates from 1724. This was the period of the Louis XIV style, named after and inspired by the famous French Sun King, who was greatly admired at the time. The style can be recognized by the symmetrical structure of the facade and its rich decoration. Classical elements such as pilasters and a cornice fit within the Louis XIV styles. The pilasters are the vertical bands, and the cornice is the horizontal band at the very top of the facade. Centrally located in the cornice is the family crest, flanked by Venus and Diana, and at the corners by Athena and Mars.

The building is currently partly used as a Mennonite Remonstrant church. If you visit the interior, be sure to note the beautiful stucco ceilings, which are also entirely in keeping with the Louis XIV style. The beautiful garden is also well worth a visit!
