1. Perry and Agnes Fitzgerald House and Cabin Marker

Inscription. The Fitzgerald House (1870), and Cabin (c. 1851), the oldest surviving brick house and log cabin in Draper, are excellent examples of pioneer craftsmanship in this former agricultural outpost. They date to the settlement period of Draper, and together represent a rare surviving example of one family's transition from a log cabin to a substantial brick home. They also tell the story of a prominent Mormon household of the period. Perry Fitzgerald was among the first settlers in Draper in 1851, having been a guide in the first wagon company to arrive in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. Perry's first wife, Mary Ann, died while they lived in Millcreek. Following her death, Perry moved to South Willow Creek (Draper) with five other families. After wintering in the fort, he built the log cabin in 1851,the same year he married his second wife, Ann Wilson. Perry later married Agnes Wadsworth in 1853, his first and only polygamous marriage, and Ann and Agnes shared the cabin. Ann Fitzgerald died in 1870, soon after the brick house was built, so that house is primarily associated with Agnes. The family operated a farm, raising

sheep, cattle and fine horses. Perry died in 1889 and Agnes in 1902, leaving an important legacy in Draper. Although the cabin was moved twice, it is now back near its original location.
