Hy Rosen (1923-2011). born in Albany. Graduated Philip Schuyler High School. Studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of NY. Enlisted in the Army in 1942 with 604th Engineers Camouflage Battalion and served in Europe. hired by the Albany Times Union in 1945 and became its first editorial cartoonist. With spot-on caricatures, wit, conviction and insight, his work was immensely popular for satirizing political corruption and championing the working class. Rosen retired in 1989. Nationally recognized, his cartoons are in the collections of the NYS Library and five presidential libraries. Other sculpted works in Albany include "The Gray Rider" at NYS Police Academy and the "NYS Women Veterans Memorial."

The current coat of arms was adopted in 1789, although prior to that it was significantly simpler, ranging from stylized lettering to a caricature of a beaver. Included in the coat of arms are references to Albany's agricultural and fur-trading past. It is supported by a white man and an American Indian and is crested by a sloop.
