1. Jonathan P. Dolliver Marker

Inscription. Dolliver was born in Virginia, and was a school teacher in Illinois prior to moving to Iowa in 1878. He opened a law office in Fort Dodge, and served as City Solicitor there from 1880 to 1888. Dolliver was elected to Congress in 1888 and served continuously until 1900, when he was appointed to the Senate. His speaking style and charisma enabled him to become a leader of the insurgent faction of the Republican Party, and made him a persuasive force, as well as a popular figure, both in Congress and on the Chautauqua circuit. His scholarly and meticulous research on tariff reform and railroad rate legislation enhanced his reputation.

Erected 1979 by the Iowa State Historical Department Division of the State Historical Society and by the Webster County Historical Society. (Marker Number 36.)
