Carter G. Woodson School originally named Hopewell Colored School
The original location of the Carter G. Woodson colored school is approximalely 525 feet to the east. Opened in 1924 with 249 students, Carter G. Woodson provided the black community with both formal and technical education for 44 ycars tthrough elementary and high school studies. The school had three different locations under the leadership of two principals (Revs Harry E. James and Mr. Bernard F. Epps) in those 44 years. Enduring segregation and adversity, Carter G. Woodson graduated its last all-colored class in 1968. Carter G. Woodson is now the public middle school in Hopewell, Virginia.
